after the birth of Jesus, remind us of Pharaoh; the Holy Family then flees TO Egypt, mirroring how Moses fled FROM Egypt before returning to free his people. Like Moses, Jesus experiences things on mountains, including the Transfiguration where the two of them are joined by Elijah. Another thing scholars recognize is that large portions of the teachings of Jesus in Matthew are grouped together in 5 collection (“discourses”) to match the five books of the Torah, which are traditionally attributed to Moses. The longest and most famous of these is the Sermon on the Mount in chapters 5-7 of Matthew. One of the lesser known discourses, contained in chapter 18, talks about life in the community of the early church. We’ll spend the next several Sundays exploring these texts, including the familiar parable of the lost sheep. Join us in person at 10:30am or later in day on YouTube.

You are Mine

Some scholars refer to the four Gospels as “portraits” of Jesus, with each one offering a slightly different picture of who Jesus was. We must recognize that Jesus did and said many things, so each author has made choices of what to include and what to omit. One of the approaches the Gospel of Matthew uses is to remind the reader of Moses, and to declare that Jesus is the new Moses. It begins from the earliest stories as King Herod’s actions against the children of Bethlehem
